about

A hundred years ago there were three ways to travel up the Clyde: you could walk, take a sailing boat or squeeze uncomfortably into a stage coach.

Then Helensburgh entrepreneur Henry Bell hit on a bright idea.

Emily Malcolm, curator of transport and technology at the Riverside Museum, describes how the 1812 launch of the small steamboat PS Comet transformed the journey – and brought booming industry to the Clyde.

While we continue walking, Susan Haddow tells us more about Govan suffragette Helen Crawfurd and the campaign for fair rents.

See more about Govan Hidden Histories and their excellent walking tours in the information section of this app.
