about

No mean city indeed (Ronnie makes reference to the novel by journalist H. Kingsley Long and unemployed worker Alexander McArthur).

This open space known as Fleshers` Haugh was once owned by the Incorporation of Fleshers (or butchers – haugh is Scots for low-lying ground by a river). And this particular haugh is where Glasgow Rangers Football Club began in 1873, as Ronnie Scott explains. Rangers moved, several times, before arriving at their present stadium in 1899, but sport is thriving on the haugh.

Glasgow Green Football Centre was established here in 2000, and in 2014 Glasgow National Hockey Centre. Specially opened in time to host the Glasgow 2014 Hockey competition.

At the crossroads the left turn would take you back to the Templeton's building, but we keep straight ahead.

George Parsonage keeps us company with more tales of the river, with the voice of Fiona Mackenzie in the background.
