about

Bridgeton began life as a small weaving village founded in 1705 on a rural estate on the outskirts of Glasgow. When the American War of Independence led to the collapse of the tobacco trade, Glasgow entrepreneurs were looking for new investments – they hit on cotton and, with a new bridge across the river, the small village on the edge of the Clyde was a prime location.

In 1775 the Rutherglen Bridge was built over the River Clyde and the area became known as Bridge Town (or Brig Toun in Scots).

Our tour leads through now hidden histories of an often turbulent industrial past which is rapidly giving way to a regeneration of contemporary creativity. On this route we will hear again from Ronnie Scott, Sue John and Peter Ross and meet Mitch Miller and Stewart Henderson.

Bridgeton, incidentally, was founded on land belonging to the Barrowfield estate – the name lives on in a street and a local housing development.
