about

A simple shed might have served the purpose. Instead, as Ronnie tells us, Victorian Glasgow produced a gloriously grandiose temple to house the city's fishmarket.

Buildings in Glasgow often get a second, sometimes even a third life and so it is with this beautiful A Listed Briggait. When the fishmarket moved to the outskirts in the 1970s the Briggait briefly became a shopping centre.

Now it is occupied by a thriving community of over 100 artists and arts organisations. The building has been transformed and restored since WASPS took charge bringing it back to life as a creative hub.

We meet Stephen Mullen in the Briggait doorway to hear about his role in the The Empire Cafe, a series of events for the Commonwealth Games exploring Scotland’s relationship with the North Atlantic slave trade.

Food and drinks using some of the Empire’s most familiar products act as inspiration for poetry, music, visual art, debates, film, workshops and walks.
